In the Lady Norwood Rose Garden is Max's first self-portrait. The technique used to make the work was borrowed from his past collections continuing Max's attraction to finely painted foregrounds on abstract backgrounds. This piece is the natural progression of Max's style from his 2021 collection SIX ON THE DOT both technically and aesthetically. As inspiration for the work, Max recalls a time when he had first moved to Wellington [NZ] to begin his undergraduate degree. He would make a small martini in an almost empty olive jar and take it to the Botanic Gardens where he would lie on the grass in the Lady Norwood Rose Garden; always wearing a three-piece black suit.
